About Sherwyn Williams
Sherwyn Williams has had over 45 years' experience as a lawyer. From 1971 to mid-2016, he was a partner in, and then a consultant with, Kensington Swan.
He is now in sole practice as a construction arbitrator and adjudicator, and is also available to provide expert determinations on construction law issues.
Experience
For most of the time Sherwyn Williams was in practice as a lawyer, he specialised in construction law, dealing mainly with claims and disputes. He advised owners, contractors, consultants, and industry organisations in respect of major projects both in New Zealand and overseas.
Sherwyn appeared as counsel in hundreds of court cases and arbitrations, including cases before the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Privy Council.
He has acted as an arbitrator and as an adjudicator under the Construction Contracts Act on many occasions, and this is his sole practice now.
Sherwyn is on the New Zealand Dispute Resolution Centre panel of arbitrators and the Building Disputes Tribunal panels of arbitrators and adjudicators.
He has spoken at conferences on construction law and arbitration, has conducted adjudicator training, and has provided numerous seminars on arbitration, adjudication, and construction law.
Sherwyn was appointed by the Ministry of Building and Housing to chair an expert panel to investigate the collapse or failure of buildings in the Christchurch earthquakes.
He was the Chairman of the Standards New Zealand committee which drafted the New Zealand Standard Conditions of Contract for Building and Civil Engineering NZS 3910:2013, NZS 3916:2013, and NZS 3917:2013.
Sherwyn Williams is a former President, and an Honorary Life Member, of the New Zealand Society of Construction Law. He is the author of Construction Arbitrations in Green & Hunt on Arbitration Law & Practice and has published numerous articles on construction law.
